Anbernic is back at it, and frankly, we’re not even mad about the delay tactics. While the hype machine for the powerful RG 55G1 chugs along without a price tag or specs, the company has decided to keep the retro crowd happy with a new release: the Anbernic RG SP. Think of it as the love child of their previous clamshell attempts, finally getting the design details right.
For years, Anbernic’s SP-inspired devices have been “almost there.” The RG 35XXSP nailed the chunky GBA SP aesthetic but lacked analog sticks and used a 4:3 screen. The RG 34XXSP added a 3:2 screen but included unnecessary sticks that cluttered the form factor. The new RG SP seems to have studied the source material closely, combining the best elements into a slimmed-down, pocketable device that actually matches the original Nintendo Game Boy SP’s proportions.
Here is what we know so far:
- Power: It runs on the same H700 chip as the newer, more powerful models, ensuring solid performance.
- Display: A crisp 3.4-inch 720×480 screen, perfect for that authentic retro aspect ratio.
- Design: It’s significantly thinner and features a reduced forehead for better portability.
- Colors: You can choose from silver, black, pearl blue, or pink. (The blue is definitely the standout).
The only missing pieces are battery life, RAM, and price. But given Anbernic’s usual shipping speed with H700-powered devices, don’t expect to wait long. This looks like the clamshell we’ve been waiting for.
