If you’ve been in the retro handheld scene for a while, you know the drill: companies pop up, make a splash, and vanish into the ether. GKD is a bit of a wild card, but their latest offering, the GKD350H Ultra, is clearly trying to make a serious comeback.
Is it a premium powerhouse or just a very expensive, shiny brick? The answer is… both.
First, the good stuff: the build quality is absolute tank territory. We’re talking metal and glass everywhere. The real star, however, is the 3.5-inch 10:9 display. It boasts a stunning 615 PPI—the same spec found in the high-end Analogue Pocket—making it an absolute dream for Game Boy and Game Gear enthusiasts. If you want the best possible screen for those classic systems without breaking the bank, this is your winner.
But, it’s not all smooth sailing (or smooth glass). A few quirks might give you pause:
- The “Fingerprint Magnet” Design: The back is a giant sheet of glass. It looks premium, but it’s incredibly slippery and a magnet for greasy smudges.
- Mixed Controls: While the ergonomics are solid, the single analog stick has a slick coating that makes it feel almost unusable, and the buttons can be surprisingly loud.
- The Performance Ceiling: It handles PSP and Saturn well, but don’t expect to tackle GameCube anytime soon.
