It turns out that even when you’re hunting a digital ghost, you can’t just demand their entire life story.

Denuvo, the anti-tamper software giant, has been on a mission to unmask “voices38,” a prolific game cracker. Initially, Denuvo went a bit overboard with their legal requests, asking Discord, Valve, and Reddit for everything from payment histories and login logs to every single comment and subreddit membership associated with the user.

A California judge, however, wasn’t having it. He slapped the brakes on the request, citing “substantial privacy concerns” and labeling the data grab as far too voluminous for the simple task of identifying a defendant.

Denuvo quickly pivoted. They trimmed their 46 massive requests down to nine surgical strikes. Instead of snooping through private messages and bank statements, they are now focusing on the essentials:

  • Real names and ID documents
  • Email addresses and phone numbers
  • IP addresses and physical addresses

The court has officially greenlit these revised subpoenas. Now, the ball is in the courts of Discord, Reddit, and Valve to see if they can provide enough breadcrumbs to finally put a face to the name “voices38.”
