While it sounds like a win for convenience, there’s a strategic layer here. Sony is reportedly eyeing a total phase-out of physical media by 2028, leaving PlayStation owners with nothing but expensive paperweights. Microsoft, meanwhile, is building a bridge to a disc-less future (rumored to be codenamed “Project Helix”) by letting you “digitize” your collection before the hardware changes.
