Level Up Your Audio: Hands-On with the Hidizs AP30 Music Boy

### Nostalgia Meets Hi-Fi

If you’ve ever looked at your high-end audio gear and thought, “This is great, but it would be better if it looked like a 1989 Nintendo Game Boy,” then Hidizs has a message for you.

The newly released AP30 Music Boy is a Digital Audio Player (DAP) that leans hard into the “retro handheld” aesthetic. It’s a tiny, squished-looking device that packs surprisingly beefy specs, including a CS43198 DAC and dual 3.5mm/4.4mm outputs. It’s essentially a high-fidelity music player disguised as a toy.

However, don’t expect to load up Pokémon on this thing. While it comes with a few built-in distractions like Tetris and Minesweeper, it isn’t a true emulation handheld. The software can also feel a bit “early beta”—the UI is a little sluggish, and the physical buttons are quite stiff.

The Verdict:

If you’re an audiophile who prioritizes form factor and wants a conversation starter to clip to your bag, this is a win. But if you want a seamless, polished user experience, you might find the “clunky” charm a bit too real.
